The short answer: pillow firmness comes down to your sleep position. Side sleepers need firm support, back sleepers need medium, and front sleepers need soft. The right firmness keeps your neck and spine aligned through the night — the wrong one is one of the most common causes of neck pain and restless sleep.
You need a firm, higher pillow to fill the gap between your shoulder and your head. A pillow that is too soft lets your head drop and strains your neck.
Enough support to hold the natural curve of your neck, without pushing your head too far forward.
Your body is already close to the mattress. A soft, low pillow avoids angling your neck upward.
If you move between positions through the night, medium firmness works reasonably well across all of them.
Your body build plays a role too, alongside sleep position.
A firmer pillow holds its support rather than flattening under more weight.
A softer pillow will not feel unnecessarily harsh, since less weight is pressing down on it.
If any of these sound familiar, it is worth trying a different firmness — not necessarily a different pillow entirely.
