A zipped quilted protector is the cheapest thing you can do to make a pillow last longer. It goes on the bare pillow, under the pillowcase, and takes the sweat, skin oils and dust mites that would otherwise soak into the filling — which is exactly what turns a pillow yellow and flat before its time.
Ours are 100% microfibre with a quilted face and a full-length zip, so the protector stays put instead of working loose the way envelope-style covers do. Standard UK size, 50 x 75cm, cut slightly larger than a 74 x 48cm pillow so it does not compress the filling. Available in packs of 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8.
Wash the protector monthly and the pillowcase weekly; the pillow itself then only needs washing two or three times a year. See how to wash pillows for the full routine, and the pillowcase sizes guide for fit.
A pillowcase is the decorative outer layer you see and change with your bedding. A protector goes underneath it, directly on the pillow, and its job is to keep moisture, skin and dust mites out of the filling. They are not alternatives — you want both, and most people only have one.
Yes, if they zip. Dust mites live in the filling, not on the surface, so the protector has to enclose the pillow completely to keep them out of it — which an envelope or flap closure does not. Washing at 60°C is the other half of it: lower temperatures clean the fabric but do not kill mites.
Barely. The quilted face adds a very thin cushioned layer, so if anything the pillow feels slightly softer on the surface. It does not change the support.
Monthly for most people, at 60°C. If anyone in the house has asthma or a dust allergy, fortnightly is better.
Yes, on a standard 74 x 48cm box pillow such as our box edge pillows — the 8cm gusset takes up some of the ease, so it fits snugly rather than loosely.
So you can keep one on the pillow while the other is in the wash, which is the only way the monthly routine actually happens. Packs of 4, 6 and 8 are what guest houses and holiday lets buy for the same reason.

Browse all zipped pillow protectors, or the pillows they protect: our full pillow range, hotel quality pillows and duck feather pillows. Protectors on their own rarely reach the £30 free-delivery threshold, so most people add them to a pillow or fitted sheet order.
