These are the pillows built to hotel specification: a high fill weight that holds its loft night after night, even filling with no cold spots or flat patches, and construction that survives repeated washing. We fill and finish them ourselves at our own base in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, which is why we can set the fill weights rather than accept whatever a supplier sends.

Every pillow here is the standard UK size, 74 x 48cm, and fits a standard 50 x 75cm pillowcase.

What makes a pillow hotel quality?

Three things, and price is not one of them.

• Fill weight. Hotels buy pillows by weight because a heavier fill holds its height under a head all night. A cheap pillow feels similar in the shop and is flat by morning.
• Even distribution. The filling has to stay where it was put. Migration to the edges is what leaves that dip in the middle after a few weeks.
• Laundering tolerance. Hotel bedding is washed several times a week. A pillow built for that survives domestic washing for years.

What hotels do not do is buy the most expensive pillow available. They buy the one that still performs after two hundred washes.

Why are hotel pillows so comfortable?

Mostly fill weight and freshness. A hotel pillow carries more filling than a typical budget pillow, so it holds your head at the right height instead of collapsing, and it is replaced on a schedule rather than left in service for a decade. The pillowcase is also usually a higher thread count and freshly pressed, which accounts for more of the feeling than people expect.

What pillows do hotels actually use?

Most UK hotels use a hollow fibre or a feather and down pillow in the standard 74 x 48cm size, chosen for a medium feel that suits the widest range of guests. Higher-end properties often put out two of each so guests can pick. Very few use memory foam, because it cannot be laundered.

Are hotel pillows firm or soft?

Medium, almost always. A hotel cannot know whether the next guest is a side sleeper or a front sleeper, so it buys the firmness that disappoints the fewest people. If you know how you sleep, you can do better than a hotel by choosing for yourself — firm for side sleepers, medium for back, soft for front.

How long do hotel quality pillows last?

Eighteen months to two years in a home, considerably less in a hotel because of the washing frequency. The fold test is the honest measure: fold the pillow in half and let go. If it springs back it has life left; if it stays folded, replace it.

How do I keep them feeling new?
