This is our closest match to what a well-run UK hotel actually uses: a medium feel with a full 700g of fill, chosen because it suits the widest range of sleepers rather than because it suits one perfectly. Filled with 100% Pure Virgin Hollow Fiber — pure white, never mixed — with a soft poly cotton cover, made at our own base in Rochdale, Greater Manchester.
74 x 48cm, the standard UK size, so any standard 50 x 75cm pillowcase fits. Packs of 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8, which is why it suits guest rooms, holiday lets and hospitality buyers as well as households.
Recycled or mixed polyester compresses permanently within months — it is the main reason cheap pillows go flat by spring. Virgin hollow fibre has never been used before, so the strands are intact and recover their loft when you plump them. Medium is the safe answer, not always the best one. If you sleep on your side you will probably be better served by our firmer box edge pillows, which carry 800g in an 8cm gusset; if you sleep on your front, by the softer quilted pillow. Almost always a medium-feel synthetic pillow in the standard 74 x 48cm size — not a specialist one. Hotels are buying for a guest they have never met, so they choose the firmness that disappoints the fewest people and the construction that survives commercial laundering. Fill weight is the number they specify, because that is what stops a pillow going flat by the middle of the night.
For a standard 74 x 48cm hollow fibre pillow, 650–750g of fill is a sound medium pillow and anything under about 500g will feel thin within months. Ours is 700g. A box-edge pillow needs more, because the gusset creates extra volume to fill — our box pillows take 800g for that reason. Weight is the single most useful number when comparing pillows, and it is the one most sellers do not publish.
Two reasons, and neither is mysterious. The first is fill weight — a hotel specification pillow is denser than a budget pillow of the same size. The second is age. Hotels replace pillows on a schedule; most households keep theirs for years past the point they stopped supporting anything. A three-year-old pillow feels nothing like a new one of the same specification.
Every one to two years for a synthetic pillow, which is sooner than most people expect. The test is simpler than the calendar: fold the pillow in half and let go. A pillow with life left springs back open. One that stays folded has lost its loft permanently and is no longer supporting your neck, however comfortable it still feels.
74 x 48cm, sometimes written 48 x 74cm — the same thing. A standard UK pillowcase is 50 x 75cm, cut slightly larger so the pillow fits inside without straining the seams. For sleeping, one per person is right for most people — two stacked pushes your neck forward unless the pillows are unusually thin. Hotels use four on a double because it looks generous when the bed is made, not because guests sleep on four. If you find yourself needing a second pillow to be comfortable, the first one is usually the wrong height rather than too few.
Yes — 40°C, one or two at a time so the drum is balanced, then tumble dry on low. Drying is the part that matters: a pillow put away slightly damp will smell, and the fill will clump. Full instructions are in how to wash pillows.
They are a compromise for side sleepers rather than the right answer. A medium 700g pillow does not fully fill the gap between your shoulder and your head, so your neck tilts down slightly all night. If you sleep on your side, our box edge pillows with the 8cm gusset and 800g fill are the better choice.
