The striped ticking on our Stripe Pillow is the traditional bedding look — the pattern you see on a proper made bed before the pillowcase goes on. Underneath it is the same 100% Pure Virgin Hollow Fiber we put in every pillow we make, 700g of it, with a soft poly cotton cover, produced at our own base in Rochdale, Greater Manchester.

Medium support, so back and combination sleepers get on with it best. It is also the one people choose when the pillow will be seen — a guest room, a made-up bed, a holiday let — because the striped ticking looks finished even without a case.
Side sleepers generally want more height than this: see our box edge pillows, which carry 800g in an 8cm gusset. Front sleepers want less: the quilted pillow.

Ticking is the name for the tightly woven fabric used as the outer casing of a pillow or mattress, and the stripe is the traditional pattern it has been woven in for well over a century. The weave is dense on purpose: it stops filling working its way out through the fabric, which is exactly what you want holding hollow fibre in place.
It is poly cotton — a cotton and polyester blend. That is the deliberate choice for a pillow casing rather than a cost saving: pure cotton creases heavily, takes far longer to dry after washing, and wears through at the seams sooner. The blend keeps the soft handle and survives being washed repeatedly.
Yes. The ticking is a casing, not a pillowcase — it is not designed to be slept on directly and washing a whole pillow weekly will shorten its life considerably. The stripe simply means the bed looks finished during the hour between stripping it and remaking it, which is why guest houses like them.
Partly heritage, partly practical. Striped ticking signals a traditionally made pillow, and in a laundry setting the pattern makes it easy to tell at a glance which pillows belong to which specification when several grades are in circulation.
Faintly, through a thin or single-layer case, in the same way any patterned casing does. Through a percale or a zipped pillow protector it does not show at all — and the protector is worth having regardless, because it is far easier to wash weekly than the pillow itself.
